Community Breastfeeding Project

Breastfeeding Latinas is an award recipient of a grant through the W.K. Kellogg’s Foundation in Collaboration with the Chicago based organization Health Connect One With the support of Health Connect One, BELA Leadership Academy, Breastfeeding Latinas has created a COMMUNITY BREASTFEEDING PROJECT in the city of Philadelphia. The project is set to begin early January 2019 and it is projected to culminate by October 2019. The goal is to provide engaging breastfeeding education in prenatal clinics during

Education will be provided in a nonjudgmental way to promote safe infant feeding practices while keeping human milk as the optimal source of food.

The objective is to provide at risk communities with the information and support they need to make an informed decision early in the pregnancy.

Philadelphia held the highest infant mortality rate until 2016 when rate decreased from 10 per thousand births to 8 per thousand (WHYY, 2016). Those are still considered alarming rates and breastfeeding can help reduce those rates.

Breastfeeding Latinas aims to decrease these disparities and increase a healthier lifestyle. With the support of community leaders and are set to embark our journey in Temple Hospital North Eastern Medical Clinic and Episcopal Hospital Medical Clinic. Faith Peterson and MaryNissi Lemon will be the Lead Educators of the project.
