Ileana has worked in the field of lactation for the past 10 years. After the birth of her first daughter, she became passionate about maternal health. Her journey began in the WIC Program in 2007 as she became a Nutrition Assistant and later Breastfeeding Peer Counselor. Throughout the years, Ileana gained knowledge in working with a diverse population. In 2013, she certified as a Lactation Counselor which sparked a passion for human lactation. A few years later she transitioned to a nonprofit organization as a Bilingual Breastfeeding Educator, doula, and facilitator. Ileana provided home-based lactation support to Latinas and African American women in and out of the city. Ileana co-wrote a breastfeeding curriculum intended to train a group of Community Breastfeeding Peer Counselors; as well as developed a breastfeeding curriculum for an evidence-based home visiting program intended to increase breastfeeding rates. By early 2017, she became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and is currently working in two birthing hospitals.
